The
Jimmy Jib is a camera crane with a remote control head, it
can be rigged at various lengths, from 6 to 40 foot.
Maximum camera weight is 50Lb, on all lengths except the 9
foot and 40 foot where it’s reduced to 25Lbs
Maximum heights depend upon many factors (the weights hitting
the floor for instance!) so are only a guide!
I’ve given under-slung heights
below, for over-slung add 3 feet:
- Standard 6foot reach 3foot tail 10foot height
- Standard Plus 9foot reach 3foot tail 13foot height
- Giant 12foot reach 3foot tail 17foot height
- Giant Plus 15foot reach 6foot tail 20foot height
- Super 18foot reach 6foot tail 22.5foot height
- Super Plus 24foot reach 6foot tail 27foot height
- Extreme 30foot reach 9foot tail 32foot height
- 40 foot 40foot reach 9foot tail 43foot height
The Jib takes about an hour to rig, for lengths upto 18 foot,
and upto 2 hours for the 40 foot. This is once all the boxes
are at the location which, dependent upon location, can take
a while!
I operate the Jib as a one man operation, swinging, zooming,
focusing and operating the hot head all from the back of the
crane.
Space is needed to swing the crane! For 3 foot tails you need
a 6 foot radius, for 6 foot, 9 foot and for 9 foot 12 foot
radius!
So to swing the crane 180 degrees with a 9 foot tail requires
12X24 foot and 360 degrees a 24X24 foot space!
The camera mounts on the front on its base plate, it will
take Film or Video cameras.
The Jib is mounted on a Tripod, this can be mounted on its
rolling base, enabling the base to be moved between shots
on smooth, firm ground. Alternatively I have some track (20
feet) and track wheels, however if it is an on shot move,
a tracker would be required.
Required for Operation
1. Camera with lens and base plate(I have a Sony base plate)
2. Video output of the camera, usually taken from the camera
head.
3. Mixer out' video feed, for multi-camera working. Often
this can also be taken from the camera head.
4. Mains electric, if available, although I can run for 6/8
hours on battery power.
